New requirements, different target environments and technological changes had created an architecture that served its purpose, but was becoming increasingly difficult for Digistore24’s developers to understand and adapt. This was particularly visible in the Docker and CI/CD setup. Different build configurations increased the number of variants. Large Docker images extended transfer times and runtimes. Compute-intensive workflows caused delays and high cloud computing costs. With around 60,000 CI/CD jobs per month, technical complexity had become a relevant economic factor. > “To be honest, we were cautious about changing an infrastructure setup that had grown over 15 years while everything was still running. The review covered the development environment, Docker build setup, CI/CD pipelines, logging, delivery architecture and cloud computing costs. The first finding was clear. There was no single bottleneck. The complexity had emerged from many decisions, configurations and dependencies that had developed over the years. Sustainable improvement therefore had to address several areas at the same time. This is exactly where MPOWR IT adds value. Less waiting. More security. Together with Digistore24’s development team, MPOWR IT defined four goals. - Standardise Docker builds and reduce their variability. - Make the images smaller and consistently harden them for production. - Make CI/CD workflows faster and more stable. - Significantly reduce the cost of around 60,000 jobs per month. Every decision had to fit the existing system, the team and its long-term development. ## Standardising Docker builds, hardening images and accelerating pipelines ### One image per app instead of a growing number of variants MPOWR IT consolidated the Docker build configurations for each application. Instead of separate images for development, QA and production, each app now uses one consistent Docker image with clearly defined build targets for the respective environment. This does more than reduce the number of images. It creates a shared standard, simplifies maintenance and makes changes easier for the team to understand. Digistore24 now builds and maintains 30% fewer images. ### Smaller images with less overhead MPOWR IT introduced minimal distributions as base images. The images now contain only what is genuinely required at runtime and are 45% smaller on average. Jobs and runtime environments therefore need to store, push and pull less data. This saves time, computing power and cost. ### Security built into the runtime MPOWR IT also hardened the images according to current security best practices. Unnecessary components were removed and the attack surface in the runtime environments was reduced. For MPOWR IT, security is not a final control step. More CPU performance, sticky disks and efficient layer caching allow completed work to be reused more effectively. Together with the smaller, more consistent images, this reduced the runtime of the affected build and CI workflows by around 71%. ## Around 77% lower CI/CD costs per month ### Less technology getting in the way For Digistore24’s development team, the value is visible in everyday work: greater stability, less waiting and a setup that is easier to understand and change again. The team now maintains only one image per app. Applications run on minimal, hardened runtimes with a much smaller attack surface. Monthly CI/CD costs are around 77% lower, creating more room for the work that moves Digistore24 forward. ## Sustainable, not just fast ### A setup is only better when the team can continue working with it MPOWR IT did not make the technical decisions alone. Every benefit and trade-off was analysed and decided together with Digistore24’s team. The result was not an external solution that would become the next system nobody fully understands after the project ended. It was a standard the team understands, applies and continues to develop. MPOWR IT also created an AI-friendly Dockerfile guideline. Digistore24 used it to develop its own AI skill for creating and maintaining Docker images. The new standards are therefore not only documented, but also embedded directly into daily development work. ## What this case shows Historically grown systems do not automatically need a complete restart.
